The journey called life has numerous incidences that seek to define and -- at times -- limit how much we may accomplish. In, If, The Story of Faith Walker, Florenza captures the perspective of a small word filled with much content -- IF. The book's main character, Imani faces many obstacles, but rather than allow them to ground her, she chooses to grow!
Imani's narrative of not knowing her mother may cause the reader to feel sorry for her, but Imani doesn't feel cheated. Instead, she is thankful for those who have powerfully influenced her life. Imani affirms, "The way I look at it, my womb-mom birthed me, but Janet and Maya gave me life. I got a two-for-one mom deal."
If...The Story of Faith Walker, is such a vital book; one that will motivate the reader to trust in the power of God to believe a change of circumstances is possible.

Great fun for kids learning their alphabet and learning to read! The bright illustrations show all sorts of chaos, as Olivia hunts for objects beginning with each letter of the alphabet - so she can win a prize trip to the zoo. Youngsters are encouraged to help her search, and to shout out the answers when they spot them.
What a charming story! The illustrations are bright and absolutely beautiful. I really love that the main character has vitiligo but that this isn't made a big deal of; it's just part of the character, part of who she is. Good book for families celebrating a birthday and considering getting a pet.

This book addresses the very heavy and real life topics of drugs, bullying and bad choices through the very positive eyes of a young bear who is of strong conviction and knows that striving to be the best he can be is the way to live a happy, satisfying life. He is a wonderful role model and because of the deepness of the topics, it can be shared with children as well as pre-teens and up as well. It is a very accessible story highlighting goodness in oneself.
This dynamic straight forward self-help book is full of positive characters who face adversity but are able to remain true to themselves and use self-determination, courage and self-respect to fight against the odds. These are strong books and they need to be heard! These are especially good for addressing trauma and for learning how to be strong and courageous!

"Welcome Home Daddy" is a touching book which addresses the topics of deployment and eventual reintegration of an injured soldier from the perspective of a young child. I really like how the author divides the books into topics such as "Daddy Receives Orders" and "Welcome Home Daddy" so that the reader can follow the character in her journey. As a school counselor working with military children, I can see the potential for using this book as a resource for a deployment group and using parts of the book each week to address each step in the deployment process. This book could be particularly meaningful and helpful for children who are adjusting to a parent who returns home injured. Very well done and I highly recommend.
Young Reader Chapter Book for grades sixth through eighth.
On the first day of school, as Alyssa boards the bus, she is carrying more than just the weight of her book bag. She is burdened with her secret, as well. One she doesn't want anyone at Ponder Lee Intermediate School to know.
It is when given a writing assignment by Mrs. Thompson (to write a letter to a student attending a school in Alabama that has been destroyed by a tornado) that Alyssa discovers a way to relieve herself of her secret. Penning her life on handmade stationery then sealing it in a yellow envelope, she places it deep within her book bag.
The next day, feeling unburdened and carefree, she reaches into her bag to turn in her assignment and discovers IT IS NOT THERE! What will Alyssa do? She doesn't want anyone, not even her new best friend, Onika, to get a hold of that letter and discover her secret.
By the time someone finds the envelope, Alyssa fears it may be too late. By now, she is sure everyone, to include the school's bully knows all her business. What she doesn't know is, what will happen next?
When I started reading this story, I was immediately drawn in. I connected with the mom and daughter's relationship. As I continued to read, I felt my heart get warm, and soon gained an understanding of what deployment was like for kids. I felt myself getting a little emotional feeling sorry for the daughter, but by the end, I was happy for her. Great story!!
This is a great read to get children in the holiday spirit! It's a great lesson in working together! As you are reading you are engaged and wondering if the animals will find Santa, and if they will find their way back home!
